Your Oily Prepartions for Summer

Your Oily Preparations for Summer

Well it’s nearly upon us, the glorious Summer and I am still trying to finish my garden planting and weeding, ready to enjoy relaxing hours outside amongst nature.
However, with all the advantages come disadvantages like wear and tear on your hands and knees, ants, mosquitoes (they just love me!)
I do have house rules for bugs: ‘My House, My rules.’
So I’m going to suggest to you some of the recipes and products that I have found useful over the years.

Hands

Alcohol free hand cleansers. No chemical ingredients that may dry out your hands.
1oz ( 30 ml.) bottle. Preferably glass.
1oz. Aloe Vera gel.
8 drops of Thyme essential oil. ***
5 drops of lemon essential oil.
5 drops Tea Tree essential oil.
Shake well and use frequently to cleanse your hands.
***Thyme is known for its ability to reduce infections.

Here’s a simple D.I.Y. hand care lotion. This is from The Prairie Homestead.
  • 1/4 cup Shea butter
  • 1/8 cup sweet almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax

Carefully melt and then add 20-30 drops of essential oils. Stir well and pour into sterilized jars.
Suggested nourishing oils. Chamomile, Lavender

Sunscreen Protection

This is great when you are sitting around the pool or on the beach.
Mix some coconut oil, zinc oxide, Shea butter, Helichrysum oil, and Lavender essential oil. Store in a glass bottle. This is a great toxin-free sunscreen.
Remember: Coconut oil has an SPF of around 7. Not enough protection to avoid sunburn so limit your time and exposure to the sun.
It’s very important to look for safer sunscreens if you use them and to recognize that you can’t only rely on sunscreens alone to prevent sun overexposure.
Read the labels and do your homework.
Avoid these chemicals: Methylisothiazolinone and Oxybenzone and Retinyl Palmate.
Avoid SPRAY sunscreens as they can cause serious inhalation problems and it is easy to miss a spot or not apply enough.

Gardener’s Essential Oil Bug Spray.

1 oz. Carrier oil.
1 tb. Witch Hazel
1 teaspoon Aloe Vera Gel
5 drops Lemongrass
4 drops Peppermint
3 drops Lavender
1 drop Thyme
1oz. Spray bottle.

I use these oils, plus Citronella, in my diffuser at night in the bedroom to ward off mosquitoes.

Use this recipe:

to soothe swelling, pain or itching from bug bites and stings.

10z. Aloe Vera gel.
3 drops German Chamomile
8 drops Lavender ***
2 drops peppermint
5 drops Helichrysum.

*** Lavender is famous for its skin care and protection. When bugs bite it soothes the pain and relieves the itch.

So, here’s to a glorious bug-free summer and a happy healthy skin.
