What do you know about this amazing plant

Eucalyptus plant is also know as Tasmanian Blue gum and is native to Australia. It is the main food source for the koala bear.

It has tremendous nutritional value for wild life.

The essential oil is extracted from the leaves.

It’s name is derived from Greek, eucalyptos, meaning well covered.
The flower buds are covered with a membrane which is thrown off as the flower expands.

There  are over 700 varieties of this plant.

This evergreen plant is able to survive the very common wild fire of Australia.
It has dormant shoots inside the tree and roots which germinate only under the trigger of heat from the flames.

The plant can live for up to 250 years.

A BIT of Folklore.

An early settler had his thumb severed by an axe. His father, who knew about Aboriginal folk medicine, advised that he apply a bandage of tightly bound eucalyptus leaves around the cut after it was sutured.

The Aborigines used eucalyptus, or “kino” as they referred to it, to heal most wounds they encountered. Later, when a surgeon saw the wound, he remarked how amazed he was because the thumb healed so quickly and without any trace of infection.

Reports like this spread throughout Australia. A pharmacist called Joseph Bosisto began playing with the idea of commercially producing eucalyptus in 1852. Soon after the first Eucalyptus radiata was distilled in Melbourne.
